Blazers lose a close one

By Chad Vargo

The eighth grade basketball team suffered a tough 29-24 loss Feb. 8 against St. Catherine's. Matt Martin led the Blazers with eight points.

Matt Martin made the first basket for the Blazers, who trailed 10-6 at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter wasn't any better for the Blazers as they missed many baskets and were beaten for many rebounds. But at the end of the quarter Matt Sowers caught fire, hitting four consecutive baskets to pull the Blazers to within 13-12 at the half.

In the third period Daniel Boone and St. Catherine's traded baskets, but St. Catherine's did manage to extend the lead to 18-16. The final period, however, was very interesting.

The referee began making questionable calls, all hurting the Blazers. With 15 seconds left in the game, Kyle Salata was called for pushing as he tried to make a basket that would have pulled the Blazers to within one point. Coach Steve Sowers argued the call and was thrown out of the game, and the Blazers went on to lose a close one.
