Math

The Voyagers (6th grade team) have met many challenges as they explored the world of math. On the path to proficiency students became reacquainted with the basics of whole number relationships and operations. Exploring further, they learned how these same skills applied to decimal numbers. Throughout these units students practiced problem-solving strategies. At present, the Voyagers are sharpening their understanding of fractions.

Some of the Voyagers have accepted math challenges beyond the required pursuits. Their journey has afforded them the opportunity to search for math-related information in a Scholastic Dyna Math scavenger hunt. Working with Hands-on Equations manipulatives has enhanced understanding of equations involving variables. The task that has demanded the greatest mental acuity, however, is Math Olympics. The students have met the challenge of this international competition with enthusiasm, resourceful in their use of problem-solving skills. In future math exploits, measurement and ratio will provide the occasion for some drawing fun.

NOTE: Teachers on the Voyagers team share math instruction.
