A long time ago, Blackwillow Hill was a beautiful place. But as time went on, people changed and Blackwillow changed too. The appearance changed such a great deal that the town committee abandoned it. Slowly, Blackwillow turned into an eerie place - a pet cemetery. Children of all ages came to bury their beloved pets. Soon the pet cemetery became cluttered with animals and Blackwillow Hill again became abandoned. Yet many people said that every Halloween the shadow of a dog lurks in the cemetery. Some said the dog was a ghost. Others said it was an old, tired mutt just looking for a friend. No one really knew until one Halloween.
One Halloween night a group of teen-agers learned a valuable lesson. The teens had planned to destroy the cemetery. The group arrived late that night and met at the front gates. They talked among themselves for awhile, then began the destruction. They smashed headstones and memorial items, dug up the remains of some animals, and tried to start a fire.
Just as they were about to start the fire, they heard a noise. They all turned to see nothing. The group began working again. The noise was heard again, this time it was even closer! The group turned to see a group of animals with empty -- and unhappy -- looks on their faces. Many had scars and looked old and shaggy. The animals also appeared to be transparent and smoky looking. They had eerie eyes and ghostlike expressions on their worn faces. The infuriated animals surrounded the teens, who left the cemetery because they were scared. The dead animals had the teens trapped, cornered like rats. Beth, the oldest, began to pray for forgiveness. Just as the group was about to give up, a dog broke into the circle.
This new dog looked old and tired. The teens began to whisper among themselves as the dog stared blankly at them. The other animals began to gather closer and closer around the group. At the last minute the ghost dog ran full into the path of the others. With a loud thud the animals collided with each other. Shrieks and animal cries broke the silence of the night.
The teens huddled closer as the animals fought. With muffled cries, the teens dropped to the ground. All that could be heard were the cries and whimpers of animals. Then silence fell over the crisp October night.
The teens looked up, and to their surprise all that was left was a gold dog tag. They all had astonished looks on their faces. Alyssa, the youngest, struggled to get up on her feet again. She went over and picked up the dog tag. She cleaned off the smooth surface and stared at it with a confused look. The inscription read: "Midnight -- Rests Under The Moonlight." The teens finally realized that the ghost dog was finally at eternal rest. The teens vowed never to talk about that night ever again and to keep it their little secret.
It has been two years since that night, and the teens have not revealed the secret. People still say that Midnight, the ghost dog was Blackwillow Hill, still lurks around every Halloween. Many people travel to see him, but they don't have any luck. He finally seems to be at eternal rest, the place where his soul is meant to be.
