The Civil War Institute

Take courses independently or enroll in the Civil War Certificate program. To earn a certificate,

you must take eight courses, four must be core courses with the remainder being electives. For an

**The “Irish” in the Civil War--Act 48 approved

 

This course looks at the role the Irish played in the Civil War and why so many fought to

unite a country that was new to them. It will look at where they came from, how they

fought, and why they fought so bravely. The course will examine the Irish on both sides,

both blue and gray. We will look at the important roles they played in the major battles of

the war and why so many gave their lives.

*The Civil War Series Overview – 1861-1870--Act 48 approved

 

The Civil War Series was developed by the Delaware Civil War Roundtable and is an

overview of the events that led to the war, major battles and the after-effects that still

impact our nation today. The war will be examined year by year. This is a program for

all ages conducted by instructors who are experts on the subject. It is one you will not

want to miss.

**Civilians During The Civil War--Act 48 approved - NEW

 

What did civilians do during the Civil War? What occupations, services and other duties

did they carry out? In this class you will explore the impact of war on the lives of the

people. How did they cope with the destruction of war and its aftermath? You will hear

about real accounts of day to day living from actual letters and diaries.

DATE: Mondays, October 18 & 25

TIME: 6:30pm to 8:30pm

*The Gettysburg Campaign--Act 48 approved

 

Two mighty armies engaged by chance in the greatest single battle ever fought in the

Western Hemisphere. A detailed examination of events leading up to the battle and each

day’s activity will be covered. Did the mighty army of the Potomac finally get the

leadership it deserved? Did Robert E. Lee blunder in his strategy? Did his commanders

let him down? Would he have prevailed if Jackson were alive? Was James Longstreet,

Lee’s “war-horse,” right in his view of the battle?

**Bull Run – Manassas Twice--Act 48 approved

 

In July 1861, the newly-formed civilian armies of the North and South face their baptism of fire at

Bull Run (Manassas) in the first major battle of the War, and Thomas J. Jackson earns his famous

nickname. One year later, the veterans of these same armies meet again on this same battleground,

where Jackson again comes to the fore. Learn what brought these armies here in the early days of the

war, what brought them back to this place, and why survivors never forgot the name of Manassas.
