On 10/18/10 Dick wrote to Jim Arrison as follows, responding to Jim's communication of the death of Sam Winner OPC '59:

Jim,

Thanks for keeping the Class advised of OPC news, even when it's less than cheery. We must all accept our mortality and remember the goods things we have experienced in life.

In that regard, here is a bit of news that I should have shared earlier but did not except with Jock Deasey. I was diagnosed with a non-Hodgkins Lymphoma in late June and have finished the prescribed 6 chemo treatments on 10/11/10. Next week is a radiation consult to decide whether it is appropriate
don't want to "cook" good organs! I have been very fortunate in experiencing relatively mild side effects, but from what has occurred I can have great empathy for those who have had the greater effects.

My first reaction was, and continues, to maintain good spirits and attitude and not indulge in self-pity, anger, remorse and all of the other negatives to which one might succumb. The 23rd Psalm immediately came to the fore and has sustained us. In truth, I think the strain and stress has been greater on Nora as she has encouraged me continuously, and probably at time with some exasperation, in my efforts to retain my lifestyle and profession as much as possible. I do tire and as a result missed the Phillies fireworks last night!

The prognosis is good. I had a clean PET scan a few weeks ago and there is nothing to suggest other than full remission. Will keep you advised.

Dick
