1960-61

Taught English on a Fulbright fellowship at the Univ. of Mandalay, Burma

1961-62

Taught in an experimental English-teaching program at University High School, University of Illinois

1962   

Got married to Cathy Murphree, who had been married briefly to my best friend, who died suddenly in the mid-fifties. Joined The Asia Foundation in San Francisco as a program officer

1963-66

Served as co-director of the Peak Scheme, a program designed to reform the primary education system of the State of Sarawak, Borneo, in the new country of Malaysia

1966-70

Was Laos Country Director of Programs for the Foundation (my wife and I were decorated by the King of Laos for our service to his country)

1970-71

Director of Southeast Asia program for the Foundation, based in San Francisco

1971-75

Joined the State Department as the Area Coordinator of the U.S. program in Laos

1975-79

Director of Programs in the Philippines for Inter­national Human Assistance Programs

1979-80

Refugee Resettlement officer for the International Institute of Connecticut

1980-81

Connecticut Refugee Resettlement Coordinator appointed by the Governor

1981-90

Short-term overseas assignments with consulting firm in Washington, D.C. Went to Guyana, Nepal, and several African countries

My interests and involvement have been with the theater (National Theatre of the Deaf and Eugene O’Neil Theater Center); Education (Hammonassett School Board), the handicapped (Recording for the Blind and Dyslectic) and the Congregation Church (mission projects). I travel extensively and have personally-funded projects in Burma, Laos, and Sumatra.
