Porter's Windsurfing Vacation to North Carolina's Outer Banks,  September 28th to Oct 12th 1996

photos taken with Kodak DC50 digital camera

For years we have been renting a house called Nor' Easter from Dick and Mary Lee Brady.  The house,  which accommodates 10 people,  is located on Weakfish Drive in Avon, NC.  Further information regarding renting the house can be obtained by contacting Mary Lee and Dick Brady at Box 257, Killington, VT, 05751 (802-422-3766) or Box 479, Avon, NC, 27915 (919-995-4858)

Nor' Easter is located on Pamlico Sound right at the water's edge and is at one of the Outer Banks prime windsurfing sites. We can keep sails rigged and ready to go, right at the waters's edge.  We shared the house with very good friends;  3 other couples the first week and 2 other couples the second week.

The living room, dinning room and kitchen are on the third floor. Oh yes, the all important wet bar and hot tub are also on the third floor. WHAT A VIEW. On the first floor there is an equipment room with sailboard storage rack, sail and other equipment storage area and powder room with washer and dryer. The second floor has four bedrooms and two full bathrooms; two of the berooms have access to the balcony area. One bedroom has a king size bed, two others with queen and the fourth has two sets of bunk beds.

GREAT VIEW of the windsurfing activities from the third floor balcony and living area.  We often video tape from this location,  especially when the wind is honking and the windsurfing action is good.  We have some incredible video footage of approximately 20 sailboarders during tropical storm Josephine on Tuesday October 8th when the winds were sustained at 30-40mph with gusts to 60+ mph.

We also have WONDERFUL VIEWS of the wildlife activities from the third floor balcony, in this case, an egret  This guy (or girl for that matter) came by every day at the same times.  We also had a cormorant that would walk out of the marsh and then walk straight down the road.  Unfortunately he had monofilament wrapped around his bill.  We were not able to catch him to cut the monfilament.off as the animal shelter had suggested.

We had some of the best windsurfing ever!  Our friend Tom is checking the wind speed while we ate breakfast;  "Hey Tom what size sail should we use today??".  We sailed alot on 6.4 to 3.4 sails; see the chart below for details.  It got a little rediculous when tropical storm Josephine paid us a visit on October 8th, with gusts well over 60mph, sustained winds 30-40mph and 4-6" of rain.

What more could you ask for on a windsurfing vacation. Great wind, great views, great fiends and great food!!  We sailed hard, drank hard,  but boy did we eat well.  Wendy made 4, yes 4 apple pies during our two weeks.   Ah,  I can still smell them baking.

What more could you ask for on a windsurfing vacation, I asked???   Oh yes, a GREAT sunset with a cocktail.  Our friends,  Tom & Jean enjoy one of the many spectacular sunsets.   WHAT A LIFE!!!

But then all good things must come to an end, back to reality. Our friends Scott and Linda,  car all packed,  are ready for their 8-10 hour drive home to Pennsylvania.  Linda is co-owner of  EXTREME WINDSURFING shop located at Lakes Bay, just west of Atlantic City, NJ.   Click Here to contact Linda for info on her shop.
