U.S. Marines with Gewehre 88 rifles?

This is a curious image. It is scan of  a photocopy of a postcard from around the turn of the last Century (odd how that sounds, even though we are now in the 21st!).  This image clearly shows United States Marines on a shipboard firing detail of some sort.  However, instead of 6mm Winchester-Lee rifles they appear to be armed with German GEW 88 Commission Rifles!

Even though the scan is a bit fuzzy (the photocopy was not any better) one can see the cleaning rod below the barrel and the thickness of the barrel.  The Winchester-Lee has a much thinner barrel and no cleaning rod.  Also, notice the magazine, it is definitely that of the Commission rifle.

Where did these Marines acquire these rifles and why were they using them?  My thinking is that these were picked up in China during the Boxer Rebellion (or depending upon your perspective, Uprising).  Perhaps they were battle trophies, or they were used in place of the Winchester-Lees when the contingent in the foreign legation compound ran out of ammunition.  Somehow I do not think we will ever know with certainty.

Why were we in China?  Read about foreign involvment in China here.

Now to find a genuine Chinese issue GEW 88 for my collection.

About three years ago I happened across a pair of them at SARCO in Stirling, NJ.  They were definitely used German rifles (unit marks on the bands) but with Chinese ideographs branded into right sides of the buttstocks.  Could have had the pair for $120.  This being Nazi Jersey the rifles were considered modern as they would chamber modern 7.92x57mm ammunition (never mind that firing this combination would be hazardous to one's health).  Never mind that the receivers were clearly marked with pre-1898 dates and the ATF says they are antique.  I suppose the fellows behind the counter were having a bad day and just didn't want to deal with me as they refused to send these obvious antiques to my home across the border in Pennsylvania.  A few weeks later a friend with an FFL was going to SARCO so I asked him to pick these up for me.  You guessed it, they were gone <sigh>.
