He was possibly a violinist with a symphony orchestra in London before coming to America. His name may have been changed -- Mac or Mc Farland (used differently by 2nd generation) may have been noted upon entering the country. It is thought that the real spelling was McFarlaine. George taught violin for a living.
No members of the 2nd generation can recall any mention in conversation or by receipt of mail of any grandparents, uncles, aunts, etc. This supports the supposition that either George's or Mary Ann's family did not approve of their marriage.
