After living a few years in Falmouth he purchased in 1782 lot No 17 of Stephen Hart in Royalsborough [now known as Durham]. Hart's buildings had just been burned and Varney built his house on the hill southwest of John Varney's blacksmith-shop. In 1899, the house was occupied by his great-grandson, George E Varney.
He belonged to the Society of Friends and their rules prohibited any active part in war. They protested against all taxes, any part of which was to meet war expenses. Since it was impossible to discriminate in tax-bills what portion was for war, some of the Friends refused to pay any taxes at all. When the collector of Royalsborough called on Nicholas Varney, he persistently refused payment of the amount assessed upon him. consequently the sheriff came and seized a new milch-cow, and sought also to take away her young calf with her. The boys, unterrified by the officer's badge and ignoring the spirit of the Quaker principle of non-resistance, mixed those calves up so that the officer was unable to decide which was the right one; and finding it difficult to catch and impossible to drive any one, he went away with the cow alone. The animal was sold, and the next time the officer came that way he brought the balance of the sale money remaining after the deduction of the tax-bill. Neither husband nor wife would touch the polluted currency, and the officer could relieve himself of the responsibility for the money only by laying it upon the high shelf at a corner of the room. There the money remained untouched for many months. When the next year the officer came round for another collection, his demand was met only by an allusion to what he had done the previous year and the statement that the money he had placed on the shelf then was still there. The officer found it so and withdrawing from it the amount required, returned the balance to its former position. It proved sufficient for the third year also.44

Children of Jonathan10 Richardson and Ann Edwards (see #255) both b. in Stonington, CT, were as follows:

256. Peter10 Yarrington married Abiah Woodward (see #257). He was born circa 1660. He died in 1725 in Stonington, CT.
He resided at Beverly, MA, in July 1696, with his wife Abiah. No other Yarrington or Yerrington family has been found in New England history prior to the Revolution. There was an Anthony Yerrengton, in New York City in 1738 and presumably he was the Anthony Yarington, of Poughkeepsie, who had sons Gale and Andrew, all mentioned in the will of Andrew Gale, of Jamaica, L.I. in 1742. The late Rev. Benjamin M. Yarrington, of Greenwich, CT, had some records of his family which stated that their emigrant ancestor was William Yarrington, who came from Wales and settled near Boston, where he married Alice Woodward, who was born in Amsterdam, Holland, probably of English ancestors. The first part of this family history is based on tradition, but it is evident that Peter Yarrington is the one referred to, and it is also in error as to the Christian name of his wife. In the Beverly records her name is given as Abiel, but the New London probate records give it as Abiah, while the Coventry records give the name of her granddaughter as Abial. Her name may have been copied as Alice from some record by mistake. Peter and Abiah Yarrington had nine children, the first seven of which were baptized at Beverly, MA, and the last two at Preston, CT. They probably moved to Preston in 1706 and from there many years later to Stonington, where he died. Presumably he died in 1725, as the inventory of his estate was dated Oct. 5 of that year. His wife Abiah and son Ezekiel were appointed by the New London Probate Court to administer to his estate. A suit againt the estate by John Starkweather was carried up to the General Court, which decided in favor of his administrators, in 1727. The Woodward family of Preston may have been related to Mrs. Yarrington. On April 18, 1711, the church at Preston received Daniel Woodward and wife by letter from Cambridge, MA, and in 1714 Hannah, wife of Amos Woodward.58

He was one of the first settlers in the town of Coventry, CT (about 1700), and was one of the proprietors' committee in 1711. At the first town meeting in 1714 his name heads the board of Selectmen elected. He resided where WIlliam O. Gardner lived in 1891 and kept a tavern there for many years. He probably was in command of the train band, as his name appears always with the title of Captain on the town records. His will was dated 1760, but there appears to be no record of his death.58
Children of Capt. Nathaniel10 Rust and Mary Atchison (see #259) were as follows:
259. Mary10 Atchison (John, #380) was born on 30 Oct 1673 of in Hatfield, MA. She married Capt. Nathaniel Rust (see #258), son of Israel Rust and Rebecca Clark, on 17 May 1692. She died on 21 Jan 1754 at age 80.

John Gorham and Desire Howland, on 1 Jan 1682/83 in Yarmouth, MA; An amusing story is told regarding their courtship and marriage. The first wife of Col. Thacher was Rebecca, daughter of Josiah Winslow of Marshfield, and niece of Gov. Edward. He was married Nov. 6, 1661, and some little time after his return to Yarmouth he and his bride called at Capt. Gorham's. Lydia was then an infant only a few months old. Col. Thacher taking the babe in his hands, presented it to his wife, and said in a sportive manner, 'allow me to introduce you to my second wife.' Mrs. Thacher took the babe and kissed it. July 15, 1683, Mrs. Rebecca Thacher, wife of Col. Thacher, died, and 'many lamentable verses' he wrote on the occasion. Before the ink was dry with which he penned the elegies, he thought of Miss Lydia who was then twenty-two and unmarried. Common decency required that he should wait three months before proposing to marry her; but passing the house of the widow Gorham one evening, he saw his son Peter's horse hitched at the door. Mistrusting that Miss Lydia was the object of his visit, Col. Thacher on the morrow privately asked his son if he thought of marrying Miss Lydia. The young man blushed, and frankly admitted that to be the object of his visit. 'Now,' said the Colonel, 'if you will agree to discontinue your visits, I will give you my black oxen.' Peter accepted the oxen, and the Colonel married Miss Lydia 5 months and 16 days after the death of his first wife, whom he had so deeply lamented, and in most dolorons rhymes.
