from a trip he took to England - unknown date - I don't know what they mean nor can I read
them very well.

April 3, 1859, Samuel Maxfield, a man of unusual height and strength, a
private in the army of Richmond, at the surrender of Gen. Lee, having left his wife and
four small children to join the army, Potsdam, N. Y. Children

Emma(9) Elizabeth SUTTON [[Samuel(8), William(7), Samuel(6), Richard(5), Aaron(4),
Moses(3), John(2), William(1)]. -- Emma Elizabeth Sutton was
born 19 Sep 1862. She married George H. Maxfield circa 1883. Emma died 6
Nov 1890 three weeks after the birth of her last child. She is buried in New Germantown
Cemetery, Oldwick, NJ. (Note: Emma was raised by William Ellsworth and Lydia Alice
Sutton) - Information gathered from family members. Children:
- 1) John Maxfield, b. 1884.
- 2) William Maxfield, b. 1887.
- 3) Emma Maxfield, b. 15 Oct 1890. She married Sumner Alpaugh circa
1910. Sumner was b. in 1889 and d. 30 Aug 1944. Emma d. 11 Feb 1987. They are buried in
Evergreen Cemetery, Clinton, Hunterdon Co., NJ. They had three children:
- a) Beatrice A. Alpaugh, b. 15 Feb 1911 - md. Charles Joseph Masser, b. 26 Mar 1937;
- b) George Newton Alpaugh, b. 21 Jan 1913 - md. Ruth Apgar, b. 1916;
- c) James William Alpaugh, b. 18 Jun 1916 - md. on 28 Sep 1939, Ruth Eleanor Hoffman, b.
20 Dec 1919.
BARTON HOWARD, son of Gideon, b. Feb. 21, 1823; m. first, Elvira, dau. of Luther
Hayden; she was b. Mar. 4, 1825, and d. April 4, 1849; he m. second, Susan Lufkin, dau. of
Amos and Johanna Maxfield of Cumberland, Me.; she d. Oct. 26, 1867; he m.
third, Malinda H. West, dau. of Hannah Melinda (Shorey) West of Palermo, Me., Feb. 6,
1869; he d. at Holbrook, April 19, 1899. He always resided in Holbrook; he was selectman
for four years, and subsequently a member of the school board. He had nine children.

- Clement Maxfield in 1658 moved to Dorchester with his wife from Taunton. Years
before they had been members of the Dorchester Church where he had married Mary Denman,
probably the daughter of John, constable 1664. Genealogical Dictionary of the

- James Maxwell,
Boston, 1684, a member of Scots' Charit. Soc. was doorkeeper for the
General Court 1693. The name may be the same as Maxfield. John, the freeman of
