William Maxfield (c 1720-1775) was the immigrant ancestor of hundreds of us. The "fact" trail really begins in Windham, ME, where he arrived with William Mayberry in the early 1740s, sometime after the area was layed out into 63 one-hundred acre lots on 22 October 1740. William lived there all his life. |

Josiah (1773-1834), son of William, born in Windham, ME, is said to have been a seafaring man, a captain and part owner of a vessel that was captured by the French. He moved to Casco in 1804 and built a house that still stands on Quaker Ridge Road. He was buried in the family graveyard near there. |

Joseph (1812-1876), son of Josiah, was born and grew up in Casco, ME. He lived in the China/ Vasselboro area off and on during his life, presumably returning to Casco and family. When he died he was buried in the family graveyard on Quaker Ridge, Casco. |

Charles Andrew (1858-1943), son of Joseph, traveled quite a lot. He is known to have been the best man at his brother Cyrus' wedding in Wisconsin in 1880, and had this picture taken in Seattle in about 1881. He returned to Maine and was married there in 1897. He finally settled in the Woodfords section of Portland (then Deering) on the farm of his wife's family (now Ocean Ave.). |

Charles Lawrence (1898-1979), son of Charles Andrew, grew up on the Woodfords farm and spent most of his adult life within a few miles of there. Working in a garage at Woodfords corners and eventually moving into his wife's family's house in Deering. Whenever Charles Lawrence was not in the area, he was away at war. Joining the Army as an enlisted man in WWI he returned home as an officer. He was in command of Headquarters Battery 240, Coast Artillery when WWII broke out. He served the majority of the war in the Pacific and finally retired from the National Guard as a Lieutenant Colonel. |
