Dear Aunt Eleanor,

Although you were our Aunt by relation, we cherished you more as our grandmother. You filled those shoes as any true grandmother would.

Growing up with you in our house was truly a blessing. We remember baking cakes and cookies with you on Sundays after church. We will NEVER forget your famous fish cakes; we looked forward to them every year during Lent. You taught us to knit and to crochet, and how to make those little crepe paper bows that went on the parasols you’d make for Deckers where you worked. Some of us remember the train ride into the city and how it made us feel, so grown up and proud, as we rode into work with you. How about all the times our little noses were pressed up against the parlor window awaiting your arrival home from work, so we could run out the door and help you up the driveway. And how your house key “magically” disappeared into your pocket the moment you unlocked the door.

We remember the countless word search puzzles you would let us help you with, not realizing we were actually learning something in the process. We remember the teaspoons of coffee you would put in our cups of milk at dinnertime, so we could drink coffee, “just like you”.

Everyone knew we could take refuge “upstairs” when we would get into scuffles with each other. You always had a comforting word to make us feel better. “Upstairs” is where we would play cards, watch T.V., play hairdresser or just talk with you. And “Upstairs” is where we later learned, that this is where you hid all our Christmas presents out of sight.

To mom the words In-Law never came into play. To her you were just “sister”. The kind of sister that was always there for her, the kind of sister that helped mom and dad raise us into the men and women we are today.

Our Children also loved going “upstairs” to see you whenever they came to visit. They will take with them through their lives the memory of your smile and the way you would kid around and play with them just to make them laugh.

You welcomed our spouses with open arms and showed them the meaning of family. All of your nieces and nephews, although spread apart, remember your loving ways and how you touched their lives as well.

You will forever live on in our hearts. Thank you for all you have done for us and giving us the privilege to be apart of your life.

We will love you always.
