bullet  General Notes:

In 1817 he received 600 acres on Cold Spring and Fines Creek, this land is located several miles north of Waynesville, North Carolina, in the beautiful rugged mountains. Both streams are tributaries of the Pigeon River. This grant is presumed as payment for service in the war of 1812. Since both he and his brother Robert, served in the militia unit commanded by Lt. Elijah Dever, in Capt. John McClure's Co.

He later purchased land near Otto, NC. This was Cherokee land ceded to the US after 1819.

J.P. Arther in "Western NC History" listed George Penland as a helper in the land survey of NC and TN boundaries. Col. Joseph McDowell and Mr. Henry and Stroter lead the party. This George was probably Robert's son.
