Captain WILLIAM HAMILTON Moore Sr. [1754]

Capt. W. H. Moore was one of Gen. Griffin Rutherford's officers in 1776.

Capt. Moore was the first white man to settle west of the French Broad River in Buncombe County.

  Noted events in his life were:

• Notes. Said to have come to America at age 15 in 1739. His mother said to have come over two years later with her youngest son. The father and grandfather had died fighting in the Irish War between Catholics and Protestants. He came with his eight brothers.

Captain of Rowan Co., NC militia in Indian skirmishes. Sent slave family ahead to prepare Buncombe Co., home. Daddy Jim and Mamie Susie came to America to be landed gentry. He served under General Rutherford, his brother-in-law. Pension application S-183 and DAR service record #114,327.

William Moore to Margaret Patton 4 Aug 1774 signed Daniel Little, her mother Charity Patton writes Daughters of American Colonists have erected a sign on Sand Hill Rd in Buncombe Co., NC "Home place of Captain William H. Moore. Here on land grant #1031, granted in 1787,he erected the first blockhouse-fort of white settlers west of the Blue Ridge. Captain Moore and his troops camped here when on an expedition against Cherekee Indians." The marker was erected by William's great, great, great grandson, Daniel Killian Moore, who served as Governor of North Carolina from 1965-1969.

WILLIAM married (Mary) ANN Cathey [1755] [MRIN: 531], daughter of GEORGE Cathey Sr. [1757] and MARGARET Moffett [1758], before 1748 in Augusta CO, VA. ((Mary) ANN Cathey [1755] was born on 3 Apr 1743 in Augusta CO, VA and died on 27 Apr 1814.)

WILLIAM next married Margaret Patton [1767] [MRIN: 536], daughter of Captain ROBERT Patton Sr [1780] and Charity [1781], on 4 Aug 1774. (Margaret Patton [1767] was born in 1749 and died on 27 Apr 1814 in Buncombe Co, NC.)
