Served as a Pvt. in the North Carolina Militia at age 17 DAR page 526 has him down as a spy (Scout in 1700's).

Married Capt. Bill Moore's daughter, moved to NC aabout 1810.

1781 (summer): Served as a substitute for his uncle Robert in Burke County, North Carolina militia under Col. Charles McDowell. In the fall he served under Capt. Joseph McDowell.

1793: On Burke County, North Carolina Grand Jury

1795: John received a 50 acre land grant on Sharack's Creek
1796: April 6th, Purchased 200 acres on Warren Fork of John's River from Titus Fox.

1797: December 2nd, Sold land on Warren Fork to Henry Avery.

1802: On committee to lay out a road from Field Bradshaw's to Greenlee's Island, and on to Morganton

1805: Received 75 acres of land from his father-in-law Capt. William Moore on Hominy Creek in Buncombe County, NC. He built a home there named "Round Meadows".

1807: On Burke County, NC Grand Jury.

1810: Moved his family to "Round Meadows".

1815: Purchased 100 acres of additional land in Buncombe County.

1837: Pension application for RW service but unable to prove adequate length of service.

1852: May 3rd, Will written.

On May 3, 1852, John wrote a will as follows:

"I John Penland of Buncombe County North Carolina being of sound mind and memorydo make and publish this my last will and testament.

First I cheerfully yield my soul to God who gave it to me, and my body I desire to be interred in a Christian like manner.

Then second my will and desire is that the land where I now live containing some three hundred and seventy seven acres be divided between my two sons Charles D. Penland and George Newton Penland as follows. Beginning on the line between me and J.R. Jones where the road leading from my house to Thomas Moore's creek crosses the same by way of my stables, then a direct line to my spring branch, ten steps above my spring, then a direct line to (Hartsell's) spring branch where the trail leading around my fence crosses the same, then down with said branch to (Reunion) creek, then down with Hominy creek to my lower line__all the land south and west of the before described line is to be Charles D. Penland's at the death of his mother, and all the land east and north of the said line aforesaid is to be George Penland's at the death of his mother.

Then third, my will further is that my beloved wife have the use and possession of all my estate both real and personal during her natural life.

Then fourth my will also is that my son William Penland have the tracts of land that he now lives on it being the same that was deeded in trust for me.

Then fifth my will is that my son Abraham have a negro girl Caroline daughter of Ruth.

Then sixth I will to my son Charles D. Penland my negro boy Riley.

Then seventh I will to my son John H. Penland two negroes Sarah and William children of Ruth.

Then eighth I will to James Cathey's three children twenty-five dollars each, to be paid at the death of my wife.

Then ninth my will and desire further is that all the rest of my estate not hereunto before mentioned be sold and divided equally between my children after the death of my dear wife. My will further is that my two sons John H. and G.N. Penland be executors of this my last will and testament and I hereby do constitute and appoint them as executors to this my last will and testament this
3rd day of May 1852, done and published in the presence of the subscribing witnesses."

bullet  Noted events in his life were:

• Military Service: Served as Spy during the Revolution.

• Notes. JOHN PENLAND - Born November 29, 1764 in New Castle County, PA. Enlisted at Appis Creek, Burke County, NC in 1780 as a substitute for Robert Penland, under Capt. Kemp and was discharged in South Carolina after three months. He enlisted again in October of the same year and started marching to Wilmington, NC, but was taken sick. Afterwards he served about six months against the Tories and Indians.
He married Alice Moon who was born in 1770 in NC and in 1811 they moved to Buncombe County, NC where in 1850 he and his wife were living. He was among Rejected and Suspended Pensioners of Buncombe County.
