General Notes:
Was a veteran of the war of 1812. Ohio FMilitary sect. 20, Jefferson Township, Preble County. He served from April 12 to August 1812. A Pvt. in Capt. James I Nesbit's Co, 3rd regt of the 5th brigade of the first Div of the Ohio Militia, agreeable to the general orders bearing the date April 14, 1812, as returned by Samual Ward, adjutant.
He was in the 1st Div Ohio Militia in the battle of Fort Miegs...
He drowned 11 days after Anna Alexander's birth. In the "Old" New Paris Cemetary is a stone inscribed: Alexander Penland a "Lad" in the old Scotch Gaelic the term "Lad" denotes a man from puberty to 40 years of age.
Preble County was part of congress lands platted between 1798-1801, it was formed in 1808 from Butler and Montgomery Counties and named for Commodore Preble, a hero of the Tripoli battles. Butler was formed in 1803 from Hamilton, which was an original County of Ohio pre-statehood 1790. Montgomery also was formed in 1803 when Ohio became the 17th state in the Union.
Alexander was raised on his Dad's section (660 acres) of land on Upper Creek northwest of Morganton, Burke County, North Carolina. 1850 tax records show 160 acres, Burke County, North Carolina and that he was a blacksmith.
1810 records show Alexander, Peter and brother-in-law David Gibbs made their move to west Ohio with Alexander and his family settling on sect 20, Jefferson Twp, Preble County. He and David possibly shared sect 20 of the twp of New Paris according to 1820 census.
Common Pleas Court records 1808-40 vol 1 by Audry Gilbert September 13, 1820 states "Letter of Adm. to David Gibbs for Estate of Alexander Penland". Security John and Peter Ireland. Widow relinquished rights, James Fleming Jr, John Cambell, Andrew Ireland (99).
