Ernest Penland served in the US Army from November 1941 to September 1945. After training in Fort Bragg, NC he was assigned to the 36th Combat Engineers. He took part in the Invasion of North Africa (Operation Torch) on November 8th, 1942. He also took part in the Invasion of Sicily (Operation Husky) on July 9th, 1943 and the Landings at Anzio (Operation Shingle) on January 22nd, 1944.

His Europe/Africa/Middle East Campaign Medal has 4 bronze stars.

  • Naples-Foggia 18 Aug 43 - 21 Jan 44
  • Anzio 22 Jan 44 - 24 May 44


Because during each of these campaigns, he took part in the amphibious landing, he should also have 4 arrowheads on the award.
